A superb and relatively unknown treasure, owned by the Vauthier family of Chateau Ausone fame. The 19 hectares of Chateau de Fonbel vineyard sit on the sandy gravel soils immediately below the slopes of Chateau Ausone and support predominently Merlot and some Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drinking beautifully already though will hold for a while too. -

Always our favourite affordable Bordeaux this is drinking beautifully now. Made from around three quarters merlot, with the rest of the blend being made of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc, it is a fruity juicy style of Bordeaux but punches well above its price tag. If you like St Emilion and Pomerol but are fed up with their ever-rising prices this is an excellent alternative with ripe generous fruit. -

Classic Saint-Julien, that shows power and richness with a sense of finesse and restraint too. The nose shows rich fruit with some lifted eucalyptus notes from the Cabernet Sauvignon. The palate brings intense cassis, with fine grained tannins and a maturity that feels traditional and proper. A very classy left bank Bordeaux.
